Too Close for Comfort

The guide was compiled with the assistance of three national experts:

1. Matthew Kaplan, a Penn State Intergenerational Programs extension specialist.

2. Adriane Berg, a boomer consultant and author.

3. Dan Bawden, founder of the CAPS (Certified Aging in Place Specialists) program for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

The resources in this guide can help families determine whether merging households is a good idea. If families do decide to make the big move, the guide will address the emotional, physical and financial aspects of intergenerational living. We have great tips on how to make that arrangement work. A Web site (www.makewayformom.com) provides additional support and information including a calculator. This tool will help families compute the cost of living together or maintaining separate places.

1. Survey Methodology: The Boomer Project (www.boomerproject.com) completed online interviews with 1,279 U.S. adult caregivers, ages 35-62, with a parent, step parent or older relative that they or someone in their household cares for. Of the 1,279 family caregivers interviewed, 548 live with the senior receiving care.
